Lloyd Leads At Azusa Pacific

Sophomore Katie Lloyd, a junior All-American out of Colorado State, took the early lead at the California Invitational Heptathlon with a first-day total of 3,102 points.
Lloyd registered career bests of 39-8.5 in the shot put and 26.28 in the 200 to assume a narrow 53-point advantage over UCLA?s Nastassja Hall who tallied 3,049 points. Lloyd, who a year ago set a CSU freshman record with 4,965 points in the heptathlon, is on pace to surpass her career-best 5,043 points which she posted just two weeks ago at Northern Colorado. Lloyd also rans a 14.82 in the 100 hurdles to open the heptathlon and then cleared 5-5 in the high jump.
Freshman Emily Pearson is currently in third place with 2,931 points after posting career bests in both the shot put and 200 meters, as well, throwing 36-5 and running a 25.47. She opened the day with a 15.09 in the 100 hurdles and then cleared 5-0.25 in the high jump.
In the men?s decathlon, sophomore Kevin Johnson is currently fourth with 3,569 points and posted a career-best 6-3.5 in the high jump. Justin Johnson of Cal State Northridge currently leads the field with 3,654 points, while Caleb Pelger of Air Force -- the Mountain West Indoor Champion in the heptathlon -- ranks second with 3,616 points. Johnson started the day with a 11.49 in the 100 meters, then jumped 22-2.25 in the long jump, followed with a put of 37-9.5 in the shot and concluded the day with a 51.46 in the 400 meters.
The multi-events will conclude this afternoon as the Rams compete in several different meets throughout the weekend.
