Men's Golf Preview: MWC Championship

Next on the Tee... The Colorado State men?s golf team will head to Sunriver, Ore., on April 28-30 to compete in the 2005 MWC Championship. The Rams are coming off a 3rd place finish at the Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah. The Rams fired a three-round 829 (-35) to earn third place. Senior John Hayes had his best finish of the season with a tie for fifth place. Hayes carded a three-round 205 (-11) and shot a seven-under 65 in the second round. Colorado State will enter the MWC Championship with seven top-10 finishes and an average team-round of 289.50. The Rams? best finish of the year came at the Irish Spring Invitational where CSU carded a three-round 889 and earned 2nd place. Junior Kevin McAlpine leads the Rams with a 72.22 stroke average and four top-10 finishes. Colorado State is ranked No. 62 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin performance index. Three Mountain West Conference teams are currently ranked in the top-15: No. 4 UNLV, No. 5 New Mexico and No. 13 BYU. Ryan Moore of UNLV is ranked No. 1 in individual play and New Mexico?s Spencer Levin is No. 2.

MWC Championship Preview... The 2005 Mountain West Conference Men?s Golf Championship will be held April 28-30 at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon. This will mark the fifth straight year that the event will be held at the resort. The men will once again play the Crosswater Course (Par 72/7,568). Situated on 600 magnificently scenic acres of woodlands and carefully preserved wetlands, Crosswater is threaded by the gently flowing Deschutes and Little Deschutes Rivers. The winner of the Mountain West Conference Tournament receives the conference?s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. New Mexico was the 2004 champion with a three-day score of 867 (+3) and UNLV?s Ryan Moore was the individual champion with a three-round 206 (-10).

Teams... There will be eight teams competiting in the 2005 MWC Championship: No. 174 Air Force, No. 13 BYU, No. 62 Colorado State, No. 5 New Mexico, No. 49 San Diego State, No. 4 UNLV, No. 119 Utah and No. 156 Wyoming.

Championship Format... The format of the tournament will be a 54-hole stroke play. Tee times will begin Thurs.-Sat. at 9:30 a.m.

Hayes Earns MWC Co-Golfer of the Month... Colorado State senior John Hayes was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Golfer of the Month. Hayes shares the honor with Spencer Levin of New Mexico. Hayes entered April with a 73.54 stroke average and only two sub-70 scores in 26 rounds played. In his two tournaments played during April, Hayes lowered his season stroke average by almost a point (73.54 to 72.84), had three sub-70 rounds and posted his first two top-10 finishes of the year.

Rams Break Single-Round Team Score Record... The Rams exploded in the second round of the Cougar Classic carding a 267 (-21) team score. This is now No. 1 on the all-time CSU record book for the lowest single-round team score. The previous record was made in the 2003-2004 season at the Fresno ?Lexus? Classic where the Rams fired a 271 in the second round.

Rams Hold 289.50 Team Scoring Average... Colorado State holds a 289.50 team scoring average for the season. In 32 rounds the Rams have acquired 9,264 strokes. The No. 1 team scoring average in the CSU record books came in the 2003-2004 season where the Rams averaged 287.17 strokes per round in 36 rounds for a total of 10,338 strokes.
