CSU Set To Compete in WWPA Championships
The Colorado State women?s water polo team will begin play in the 2005 Western Water Polo Association Championships at the Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis, Calif., on Friday. CSU, the 12th seed in the tournament, will take on fifth-seeded Cal State-San Bernardino in the first round. The Rams handed the Coyotes a 6-5 loss in the Davis Shootout earlier this month marking their only win over a WWPA school this season.
Measuring Up the Competition
Western Water Polo Association - Colorado State joins the WWPA as its newest member and only school from outside the state of California. The Rams bring the league?s membership to 12 teams including nationally-ranked schools such as Loyola Marymount, UC Davis and UC San Diego. Other participating schools include: Cal State Bakersfield, UC Santa Cruz, Cal State San Bernardino, Chapman, Sonoma State, Santa Clara, Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay.
CSU?s first match will be against the fifth-seeded Cal State San Bernardino
Coyotes who will bring a record of 18-18 into the tournament. The Coyotes are led by freshman Freyja Berg who has scored 56 goals on the season and ranks 22nd in the nation in total goals. Goalie Lauren Cooper is second in the nation in saves with 261 on the year.
Statistically Speaking
The Colorado State women?s water polo team is ranked 37th in the nation in goals per game averaging 6.6 goals per contest after 20 matches. Defensively, the Rams rank 37th in the nation giving up 8.9 goals per game. Individually, CSU freshman Annie Quinn is tied for 54th in the nation with 1.4 goals per game while goalkeeper Holly Stanfill is 19th in the nation with 7.7 saves per match.
Second Half Surge
Colorado State has outscored its opponents 72-70 in the second half this season including a 37-28 advantage in the fourth quarter. In contrast, the Rams are being outscored 59-30 in the first quarter and 108-60 in the first half.
They?ll Be Back
The Colorado State wate polo team will not lose any players to graduation in the offseason. The 2005 Rams are comprised of six juniors, one sophomore and eight freshmen who will return to the CSU lineup in 2006. Over 56 percent of the team?s goals this season have been produced by freshmen while nearly 78 percent of the team?s assists have been by the frosh. class.
