Water Polo Falls in First Round of WWPA Tournament

The No. 12-seeded Colorado State water polo team suffered a 6-3 setback to No. 5-seeded Cal State San Bernardino in the first round of the Western Water Polo Association Championshps Friday in Davis, Calif.

Cal State struck first with a goal just 1:19 into the game but CSU knotted the score at 1-1 just 19 seconds later when junior captain Marisa Fernandez found the back of the net for CSU. The Coyotes tacked on another goal in the first to bring the tally to 2-1, a score that would stand until the halftime break.

In the third quarter, CSU San Bernardino netted three unanswered goals before Laurien White cut the Coyote lead to three at 5-2 with 3:27 to play in the match. San Bernardino scored again with under two minutes to play before CSU's Laura Scruggs made the final 6-3.

CSU goalkeeper Holly Stanfill recorded eight saves on the day while Scruggs, White and Fernandez rounded out the offense for the Rams with one goal each.

The Coyotes were led by a three-goal performance by Kacey Carruthers and eight saves by Lauren Cooper.

With the loss, CSU drops to 6-15 on the season and will face the loster of the Cal State East Bay vs. Chapman match Saturday at 10 a.m. PT.
