Lloyd Wins MWC Heptathlon Crown

Colorado State sophomore Katie Lloyd won the Mountain West Conference heptathlon title, coming from behind in the sixth event -- the javelin -- to take the lead and hold on with 5,141 total points over the two days. Junior Cristina Gourdin finished fourth, while freshmen Emily Pearson and Ashleigh Morton took seventh and eighth, respectively.

Lloyd leaped 18-6 to finish third in the long jump, then was third in the javelin with a throw of 121-6 and ended the day with a personal best time of 2:26.80 in the 800 meters to win the event with 5,141 points.

Gourdin began the day with a jump of 15-9, then won the javelin portion with a personal best throw of 130-5 and ended the competition with a personal best time of 2:19.98 in the 800 meters to have a two-day total of 4,985 points.

Pearson jumped 16-2.75 in the long jump, threw 125-0 in the javelin and ran a 2:29.44 in the 800 meters to finish seventh overall with a total of 4,724 points and finish as the top freshman in the competition.

Morton started the day with a personal best jump of 17-8 in the long jump, then threw a personal best 127-4 in the javelin and ended the day with a personal best 2:32.02 in the 800 meters for a two-day total of 4,578 -- surpassing her previous career-high of 4,424 points.

The men?s decathlon was delayed in the middle of the pole vault competition due to lightning.

The Mountain West Conference Championship continues tomorrow with the preliminaries in the sprints and middle distance and several finals in the field and distance events. The women?s hammer throw starts action at 10:00 a.m. the women?s steeplechase kicking off the running events at 11:30.
