Fort Collins, Colo. ? Shane Brown, who guided Houston Baptist University to back-to-back NAIA Final Four appearances in 2004 and ?05, has been named assistant women?s basketball coach at Colorado State University.
Brown?s appointment completes first-year coach Jen Warden?s staff. He joins Heath Alexander and Randie Wirt as Warden?s three-member coaching staff.
?Shane Brown is going to be a tremendous asset to our basketball program,? said Warden. ?He brings experience and success as a head coach to our staff. He has had great success previously as an assistant coach at the Division I level, which provides our program additional recruiting and coaching experience.
?We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to hire someone of Shane?s experience and reputation. I?m excited he has chosen to be a part of our program.?
Brown coached five seasons at HBU, where he had a 166-24 record and won the regular season and conference tournament championships all five seasons. In addition, his squad had a 78-2 home record.
Brown was named the conference coach of the year following each of the past three seasons. His 2005 squad finished 36-3 and won 34 games in a row at one point. The team was ranked No. 1 in the final regular-season poll. A year before, HBU was 33-5 and made the school?s first-ever Final Four appearance. Houston Baptist won at least 31 games in each of his five seasons.
Prior to coaching at Houston Baptist, Brown was an assistant women?s coach at Rice University for 1998-2000. The Owls had a three-year record of 63-31 and won the Western Athletic Conference tournament that season, then defeated ninth-ranked UC-Santa Barbara in the first round of the NCAA Women?s Basketball Tournament. Rice won at least 20 games in each of Brown?s three seasons on the staff.
He also was formerly the girl?s basketball coach at Westbury Christian School in Houston from 1996-97, compiling a 57-14 record in two seasons. Westbury Christian won the state title in 1997, a season after reaching the semifinals of the state tournament. He also previously coached the Houston Insiders girls AAU travel team in 1996, and was formerly an assistant boy?s coach at Westbury Christian in Houston from 1993-95.
Brown earned a bachelor?s degree in 1991 from Eastern Kentucky University, and in 1993, earned a master?s degree from Harding University in Searcy, Ark.
Warden was named the Rams? new women?s coach last month, and a short time later named Alexander and Wirt to the staff. Alexander was most recently an assistant at Oregon State, while Wirt was playing professionally in Europe.
