Colorado State All-American Loree Smith today again proved she is one of the best hammer throwers in the nation, placing fourth at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Carson, California. Also competing today for the Rams were freshmen Jeff Wahl and Kirsten Anthony, who finished seventh and eighth, respectively in the junior 1500 meters.
Smith threw 220-2 on her sixth and final throw to finish fourth behind the 2004 Olympic Trials champion Erin Gilreath, Bethany Hart and Amber Campbell. Smith will now continue to compete in hopes of representing the United States at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Both Anthony and Wahl earned Junior All-American status by placing in the top eight in their respective events. Anthony finished eighth with a time of 4:32.97, just 0.44 off her personal best time from April, while Wahl was seventh with a time of 3:53.24 to finish seventh overall.
Former CSU All-American John Woods did not make the finals of the 100 meters after running a 10.25 in the semifinals to place 14th overall. Woods did not compete in the 200 meters today.
Freshman Jarelle Johnson is the lone representative for Colorado State competing tomorrow, as he jumps in the juniors triple jump, beginning at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific).
