Next on the tee...
The Rams begin their 2005-2006 season this week in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The tournament runs Sep. 16-17 and is held at The Championship Golf Course, a 7,248 yard, par-72 course. The Rams will be competing against the likes of Fresno State, Arizona, and Texas Tech who are among 21 teams particpating in the Tucker. Tee times are to still be announced with 36 holes scheduled for Friday and the last 18 holes are to be completed on Saturday. Derrick Whiting, Kevin McAlpine, Nate Pettitt, Aaron Weston and Zen Brown will be competing for CSU in the tournament.
McAlpine set for senior season... In his junior year at Colorado State Kevin McAlpine led the Rams with the team's lowest stroke average of 72.53. He also led the team in top 10 finishes and was tied for first with five top 20 finishes. McAlpine was the lone Ram selected to the All-Mountain West team.
White hot Whiting... Derrick Whiting, who was just a sophomore last year, finished second in strokes per round with a 73.05 average. He was the only Ram to have more than five sub-70 rounds accomplishing this feat seven times last year.
Pettitt has potential... Nate Pettitt went into the Mountain West Conference Championships fifth on the team in stroke average with a 74.51. He came out of the MWC Championships with a 9th place finish and a 218 three-round total. Pettitt carded rounds of 71, 72 and 75 as he led the Rams with the highest place finish.
How the Weston was won... At the 2004 Tucker Intercollegiate Aaron Weston had a three-round total of 220 led by a final round of 71. This overall total earned him a tie for 24th, the highest finish of any Ram player in the event. Rams want to break inside the 10... Last year at the Tucker Intercollegiate the Rams finished with a three-round total of 878 and earned 11th place. This was one of only four times last year that the Rams did not finish in the top 10 during a regular season tournament.
Newcomers abound... The Rams welcome four newcomers to the roster including incoming freshmen Riley Arp, Zenon Brown, Adam Nelson and Herve Gevers. Praneeth Perera, who competed in three tournaments last year and averaged 74.55 strokes per round, returns as a redshirt freshman.
Rams postseason legacy... The Colorado State men's golf team will look for its 11th-straight NCAA Regional bid in the 2005-2006 season. The team will play in a total of five tournaments in their fall season before winter break. Once the spring starts the Rams will contend in six tournaments prior to the Mountain West and NCAA competitions.
