Tennis Team Garners Big Wins at BYU Invitational

The Colorado State Women's Tennis team started off the 2005-06 season with some strong wins in the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah Thursday. Freshman Lauren Strasburger knocked off Liz Ferris 6-4, 7-6 (4) in her second match of the tournament. Ferris, of Utah, finished last season ranked No. 19 in the Central region. Sophomore Anne Andersen, in only her second year with the Rams, defeated BYU's Sofia Holden 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. Holden finished last season ranked No. 27 in the Central region.
CSU finished the day 10-3 in singles play during Thursday's action. Senior Jessica Jones and junior Emily Kirchem each started the day with byes, but were successful in each of their second matches. Kirchem defeated Hadley MacFarlane of Boise State 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Jones stomped Erin Manning of Utah State in a quick 6-2, 6-1 match.
Freshman Greer Satherlie won her first two matches and ousted No. 3 seed Karine Bourdages of Utah 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-1 in her second match today. Senior Carla Pallares won her first match 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 defeating Courtney Andersen from Utah State and then was defeated in her second match by nationally ranked No. 69 Olga Boultcheva of BYU, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Courtney Akel defeated Lora Bradley of Weber State 6-3, 7-5, but later lost to Dee Dee Nelson of Utah State 6-3, 6-2 while senior Jasmin Singh lost to Utah's Jessica Watts 7-6 (5), 6-1 in her first match of the day.
Tomorrow the Rams begin play at 10:00 am when Kirchem takes on Andersen and Strasburger competes against BYU's Anastasia Surkova. Jones plays Utah State's Dee Dee Nelson and Greer Satherlie matches up with Weber State's Karla Pretorius.
In doubles action, CSU finished 2-1 including a win from Kirchem and Andersen over Alex Ilie and Gabriela Vinditto of Weber State, 6-2. Pallares and Strasburger also earned a win over Utah State's Jill Smith and Lauren Monson, 9-8 (5) while Singh and Akel fell to BYU's Brianna Williamson and Hanni Deters.
Friday's doubles action will begin at 3:30 and will be highlighted by a matchup between Pallares and Strasburger taking on teammate Jessica Jones who will team up with BYU's Dolly Cheng.
