Ram Tennis Finishes Second Day of Tournament

The Ram tennis team finished the second day of the BYU Invitational with some strong performances.
One of the first matches of the day featured two Rams against each other for the first time in tournament play. Junior Emily Kirchem was slated to play sophomore Anne Andersen for the quarterfinal match in the open bracket of the tournament. Andersen overpowered Kirchem winning the match 6-2, 6-3. Andersen then lost in the semifinals to BYU's Lauren Jones 6-4, 6-1, who is ranked No. 94 in the nation.
Freshman Lauren Strasburger began the day with a tough match against Anastasia Surkova of BYU, but lost 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Senior Jessica Jones defeated Utah State's Dee Dee Nelson in the quarterfinals 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4), but lost to Dolly Chang 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. Greer Satherlie, a freshman, overcame Karla Pretorius of Weber State in the quarterfinals 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, but lost to Boise State's Tatiana Ganzha 6-1, 6-0.
In the consolation bracket, freshman Courtney Akel beat Boise State's Stacey Housely by defalt and beat Weber State's Maria Bublik 7-5, 6-1 to make it into the consolation quarterfinal game. Senior Jasmin Singh lost to Rana El Derwy of BYU 6-1, 6-1. Carla Pallares, a senior, beat Gabriala Vinditto of Weber State 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, but retired against Utah's Cinthia Saucedo.
In doubles play Kirchem and Andersen defeated the Boise State duo of Megan Bjorkman and Hadley Macfarlane 9-8 (6), but lost to Sofia Holden and Olga Boulytcheva of BYU in a close 8-6 match. Jones and Satherlie lost to Utah's Jessica Watts and Cheyenne Reveche 8-1in the quarterfinals round.
The Rams play tomorrow to finish the tournament.
