The Colorado State Men's Golf team will travel to San Diego, Calif. to compete in the Barona Collegiate Cup, Oct. 23-24. The tournament, hosted by San Diego State, will take place at the Barona Creek Golf Club, a par-72, 7,315-yard course. Eighteen teams will compete in the tournament including four Mountain West schools: Colorado State, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming. The 54-hole tournament will begin Monday with 36 holes and conclude Tuesday with the last 18. There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. PT each day. Riley Arp, Zen Brown, Dustin Morris, Aaron Weston and Derrick Whiting will compete in the tournament for CSU.
Rams Recap...
Colorado State earned their third top-five and fourth-straight top-10 finish at the District 7 Shoot-Out, Oct. 9-10 in Las Vegas. The Rams carded rounds of 283-277-288 to earn an 848 tournament total and a tie for third place. Their second round 277 is their lowest single round of the season, and the 848 is their lowest tournament total of the year. The Rams have carded three top-five finishes in four tournaments this year. This matches last year's season total of four team top-five finishes in 12 tournaments. Two of the top-fives last year were fifth-place finishes. The only tournament the Rams did not card a top-five is the Tucker Intercollegiate, Sept. 22-23, where the Rams earned 10th place. They finished second at the first tournament of the season, thier highest team finish this year, at the Miranda Invitational Sept. 9-10. There, they carded rounds of 286-280-288. The second-place finish they earned on Sept. 9-10 is their highest finish since the Rice Intercollegiate, Feb. 6-7, 2006. Colorado State was ranked 53rd in the nation as a team by Golfweek on October 8.
Green, Gold & Brown...
Sophomore Zen Brown earned his fourth consecutive top-20 finish at the Barona Collegiate Cup. Brown recorded a 71 on his first round and followed up with two-straight 69s to achieve a 209 three-round total and a tie for 13th. Brown has led the Rams in every tournament this year, including the Miranda Invitational, where he tied for fourth place with teammate Dustin Morris. Brown has four top-20 finishes and three top-ten finishes on the year. In contrast, Brown earned three top-20 finishes in the entire 2005-06 regular season. At the Wolf Pack Classic, Oct. 2-3, Brown earned his highest finish of the season, second place. In Reno, Brown recorded three-straight sub-par rounds (67-70-71) to earn a 208 three-round total, and a second place finish. Brown was three strokes away from individual champion Dustim Pimm of Utah. Pimm carded a three-round 205. The first-round 67 is Brown's lowest single round score this season. The second place finish is Brown's highest finish of his career. Brown achieved a tie for fourth place at the Falcon Invitational, Sept. 9-10. There, he carded rounds of 74-68-69 earning him a 211 three-round total and a tie with teammate Dustin Morris. Brown has carded seven sub-par rounds this year. As of Oct. 16, 2006, Brown is in sixth place in the Mountain West Conference in terms of stroke average, and is first with golfers who have recorded twelve rounds or more. He has led the team since the first tournament of the season, and holds a 70.50 stroke average.
Best Weston...
Senior Aaron Weston carded rounds of 70-71-71 to earn a 212 three-round total. Weston missed the top-20 by one stroke, and tied for 21st. Weston shot only one sub-par round in his first six of this season. Since, Weston has carded six-straight par or sub-par rounds in his last six rounds. Weston had a career performance at the Wolf Pack Classic earning the highest finish of his career by registering a tie for sixth place. He earned the tie after posting rounds of 70-72-69. This led Weston to his career low three-round tournament total, 211. Weston beat out his previous career high finish, a tie for 22nd and he earned a tie for 22nd at the Ron Moore Invite, March 20-21, 2006. There, he recorded rounds of 71-69-74 for a 214 three-round total. The 214 three-round total was his previous career low tournament total. Weston is tied for 13th in the Mountain West holding a 72.58 stroke average.
Marvelous Morris...
Dustin Morris, a freshman from Crosby, Texas, carded rounds of 70-69-72 for a 211 three-round total which earned him his second top-20 finish of the season. The 211 three-round total matches his career low that he posted at the Miranda Invitational Sept. 9-10. At Colorado Springs, Morris carded rounds of 72-70-69 to achieve a 211 three-round total and a tie for fourth place with teammate Zen Brown. Morris missed a top-20 finish by one stroke at the Wolf Pack Classic. Morris tied for 26th after posting rounds of 77-73-67. This led him to a 217 three-round total. The final round 67 is his career low single round score. Morris is currently second on the team in terms of stroke average, and holds a 72.25. He is tied for 10th in the Mountain West in terms of stroke average.
2005 Barona Cup...
Last year at the Barona Cup, the Rams earned a tie for 10th place after posting rounds of 287-279-283=849. Zen Brown recorded rounds of 72-71-69 which led him to a 212 three-round total and a tie for 31st. Derrick Whiting earned a tie for 48th after carding rounds of 73-73-70. This led him to a 216 three-round total. Aaron Weston notched rounds of 74-74-79 to lead him to a 227 three-round total and a tie for 89th. James Love of Denver earned the individual crown at the tournament by posting a 201 (-15). Brigham Young won the tournament after recording an 822 (-42) team total.
