FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State men's basketball team picked up a 69-53 win over Regis University in its first exhibition game of the year Tuesday night in Moby Arena.
The Rams jumped out to an early 11-4 lead just over five minutes into the game before the Rangers cut the CSU advantage to 13-12 at the midway point of the first half, thanks in large part to a six-minute, fifteen-second scoring drought by the Rams. CSU then used a 16-4 run in the next five-and-a-half minutes to bump its lead to 13 before holding a 29-18 advantage at the half.
The homestanding Rams held on to a double-digit lead for the entire second half, leading by as many as 18 late in the game before securing the 69-53 victory over the Rangers.
"We had a lot of bright spots," commented CSU Head Coach Dale Layer following the exhibition tilt. "Cory Lewis, when you campare him tonight with where he was a year ago, it's night and day. Stu (Creason) was terrific in stretches and Jarrel Smith had some real bright spots. Alton Robinson gave us energy on the glass and on the press."
Cory Lewis finished as the Rams' top scorer with 17 points to go with a game-high seven assists and three steals. Freshman Jarrel Smith scored 12 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds while sophomore Stephan Gilling hit 3-of-8 three-pointers to finish with 11 points.
Regis forward Brandon Butler led the Rangers with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists while Nick Winder had 11 points and nine boards on the night.
CSU sat preseason all-MWC selection Jason Smith due to an ankle injury along with Junior College transfer Tyler Smith, who was serving the first game of a two-game suspension for an off the court incident this past summer.
The Rams will be in action again on Friday night when they round out their exhibition slate against Concordia-Montreal. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. in Moby Arena.
