Colo. Springs, Colo.-The Colorado State Tennis team picks up two number one finishes in doubles, finishing the day 5-3 overall and went 4-5 in singles action.
In doubles action, the Rams took first place in flights one and two. In flight one, Emily Kirchem and Hilary Tyler completed their doubles play with a 2-0 finish today, going 4-0 overall. They defeated Abayan/Morgan of AFA, 8-2, and McClelland/Shurr of NAU, 8-2, to take first place. In flight two, teammates Laura Neal and Lauren Strasburger went 1-1 on the day, 3-1 overall, defeating, Aksdal/Iwinski of DU, 8-5, and losing to Wyoming's Lazar/Summerfield, 8-6. However, Neal/Strasburger finished ahead of Wyoming, winning in a three-way tie, having won 30 games overall and taking first place.
In flight three, Kirsten Stople and Greer Satherlie went 1-1 on the day. In flight four, Sarah Seltsam and Katie Brown, also went 1-1.
In singles action, CSU went 4-5 on the day, taking six top four finishes in the tournament. Kirchem, Strasburger, Neal, Tyler, Stople, and Al-Jazzaf all took top four spots. The best finish for CSU in singles play was a second place taking by Junior Hilary Tyler. Tyler was defeated by Kyla Iwinski of DU, 6-1, 6-0, in the finals match of flight four.
Also in singles, both Sophomore Greer Satherlie and Freshman Katie Brown won their consolation draws, each taking fifth place. Sarah Seltsam was defeated by Tori Almagno of Colorado, 6-3, 6-2, in the finals of the flight seven consolation draw, finishing in sixth.
"I am pleased where we finished in both singles and doubles," head coach Jon Messick commented. "This tournament showed us we have stronger doubles combinations than in previous years, which should help us down the road."
