WAHIAWA, Hawaii- Two Rams are in the top-5 after the second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate concluded. Freshman Zen Brown is tied for second while junior Derrick Whiting is tied for fourth. Colorado State, as a team, is tied for fourth place after carding their second straight team season low round of 277 at the 6917-yard, par-72 Leilehua Golf Course.
Freshman Brown is looking for his third top-20 finish and second top-10 finish of his short career. He carded his second consecutive career low 67 in the second round. The two 67s add up for a 134 (-10) total and a tie with Glenn Northcut of Auburn for second place. Brown is trying to best his 209 three-round total he carded at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Nov. 3-4. It was at the Del Walker that Brown earned his only collegiate top-10 finish, a tie for fifth, after carding rounds of 68-71-70. Brown is only two strokes away from the individual leader Jay Mosely of Auburn who is leading the 106 individual field at a two-round total 132 (-12). Mosely has carded two consecutive rounds of 66.
Whiting, who is coming off his first ever collegiate individual championship at the Rice Intercollegiate Feb. 7, has carded a 67-68 for a 135 two-round total. His first round 67 matches his career low. Whiting shot a 67 one other time this year: in the third round of the Tucker Intercollegiate Sept. 17. Whiting's season low three-round total is a 216 which he earned at the Barona Cup October 24-25 after carding 73-73-70.
Colorado State is tied for fourth place with a 554 two-round team total. The Rams carded their second consecutive team season low round of 277. The Rams are tied with the University of Arizona as well as fellow Mountain West competitor, San Diego State. Before the John Burns Intercollegiate the Rams team season low round was a 279 that they carded in the second round of the Barona Cup October 24. Colorado State is in position to leave the nineteen team field with their fifth straight top-10 team finish.
Brigham Young University is tied for first place with Auburn University. Both teams are at a 547 (-29) total. Brigham Young is tied after shooting a tournament low round 269 (-19) in the second round. This round coupled with their first round 278, gives the Cougars the two-round 547 total.
Colorado State is one stroke ahead of New Mexico, which is in 7th after carding a 279-276-555, UNLV, which is tied for 11th after carding a 282-278-560 and Utah, which is in 18th after carding a 292-287-579.
The final 18 holes are set to tee off Friday.
