Long Distance Shooting Pushes Wyoming Past Rams

Despite a career-high 20 points from junior Molly Nohr, the Colorado State women's basketball team (8-17, 2-12 MWC) fell to the Wyoming Cowgirls (19-6, 9-5 MWC), 78-71 in Moby Arena on Saturday afternoon in the season's second installment of the Border War. Wyoming used a 12-for-28 effort from beyond the arc to hold the Rams at bay en route to their fourth-straight conference victory.
Senior Melissa Dennett kept the Rams in the contest early on, scoring the eight of the Rams' first 10 points of the game. However five treys in the games opening 11 minutes gave Wyoming a nine-point advantage, 21-12. The Rams responded with a 20-8 run over the final 8:21 of the first half to take a 32-29 lead at the half.
That momentum, however, did not carry over into the second half. Wyoming opened up the second half by scoring 10-straight points, including two more three-pointers before Nohr got the Rams on the board with a layup at the 16:10 mark to cut the Wyoming lead to 39-34. Five points was as close as the Rams would get for the remainder of the game. Wyoming extended its lead to 14 points, 56-42 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game on the heels of two consecutive three-pointers.
The Rams offense, sparked by Nohr, who scored 10 of the Rams' final 16 points, crawled back into the game and cut the lead to six points with 24 seconds remaining in the game. Wyoming converted on the final 9-of-12 free throws over the games final 2 minutes, including 3-of-4 in the final 24 seconds, to walk away with the seven-point victory.
Dennett led all scorers with 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting and 10 rebounds in the game. Dennett picked up the 100th block of her career and she also moved past former Ram Shannon Strecker for 10th all-time in career rebounding and now has 633 boards for her career.
Nohr's 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting set a new career high, eclipsing the old mark of 18 set at Wyoming earlier this season. She also notched four assists.
Seniors Lindsay Thomas and Vanessa Espinoza round out the Rams' double-figures scorers. Thomas finished with 14 points and five rebounds to go along with a career-high seven assists. Espinoza added 10 points, two rebounds and three assists.
The Cowgirls also had four players in double-figures, led by Hanna Zavecz with 20. Jodi Bolerjack added 19, while Erin Hicks and Megan McGuffey pitched in 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Next up, the Rams play their final home game of the season on Thursday when they host conference-leading BYU. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m. at Moby Arena.
