San Bernardino, Calif. - The Colorado State water polo team battled cold temperatures and adverse weather conditions to earn a first-day split in the Coyote Classic hosted by Cal State San Bernardino Saturday. CSU defeated Macalester 17-5 before losing a 12-10 decision to host school and Western Water Polo Association foe Cal State San Bernardino.
CSU sophomore Annie Quinn extended her consecutive games with a goal streak to 12 games scoring five goals in the first quarter against Macalester. A total of nine Rams scored in the victory including Quinn's school-record tying five-goal performance.
In the nightcap, CSU's rally fell two goals short against the host Coyotes. CSUSB led 4-1 after one period and extended their lead to 7-2 at the half. The Rams closed the gap to 7-4 early in the second but the Coyotes held CSU off taking an 11-6 lead into the final frame where CSU's 4-1 period would not be enough to overcome San Bernardino.
Laurien White and Quinn each recorded three goals apiece while Emily Chambers had two and Emily McCullough and Marisa Fernandez chipped in one. Quinn's goal extended her scoring streak to a school-record 13 games.
"We just didn't seem to click today", commented CSU head coach John Mattos. "We need everybody hitting on all cylinders to beat a team like San Bernardino, especially in their own pool."
CSU concludes play in the Coyote Classic Sunday with matches against Notre Dame and Wagner. The Rams will play eight games in the next eight days all in the state of California.
