COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado State junior Derrick Whiting has been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for February. It marks the first time in his career he has received the monthly award.
The Alexandria, Minn., native recorded back-to-back top-three finishes during the month of February. At the Rice Intercollegiate Feb. 6-7, Whiting became the first Ram since Martin Laird in 2004 to win a tournament. His three-round 219 anchored the Rams to a second-place showing, their highest team finish since the Irish Spring Invitational (March 7-8, 2005). His rounds of 72-77-70 led him into a playoff with four other golfers. Whiting became the ninth golfer in CSU history to notch a tournament win after he defeated Brian Grossman of Stephen F. Austin on the third playoff hole. Whiting and Grossman both posted pars on the first playoff hole to make it a two-man race. The duo then matched birdies at the 545-yard, par five 11th hole before Whiting won the playoff on the next hole with a par while Grossman took a bogey.
He followed up by carding a three-round 203 (67-68-68) at the John Burns Intercollegiate Feb. 22-24. In the first round, his 67 matched his career-low single-stroke round. The only other Ram to card a 203 or below is Nolan Martin, who carded a 203 at The Nelson (Oct. 20-21, 2003). Whiting's 203 is only one stroke behind the lowest Colorado State individual three-round total, 202, which was carded by Martin as well, at the John Burn Intercollegiate (Feb. 18, 2004).
Whiting, who has four top-20 finishes this season, holds the ninth-lowest stroke average in the MWC with a 72.00 this season.
