Eight Rams Regionally Qualify at Rob Upton Invitational

Both the men's and women's outdoor track & field teams at Colorado State were victorious at the 13th annual Rob Upton Invitational at the Jack Christiansen Track on the campus of Colorado State. The men scored 288 points, while the women tallied 292.
Eight Rams qualified for the NCAA Regional meet in Austin, Texas May 26-27. Junior Magnus Lohse began the day by throwing a school record in the shot put at 62-11.25, breaking his own previous record of 61-2.75 from 2004. Junior Haley Hunt threw 184-4 in the hammer to place second overall and finish as the top collegian with her regional qualifying throw. Both seniors Katie Hansen and Jill McCormick qualified in the discus, finishing first and second, respectively, while senior transfer Matt McKinney was the top collegian and second overall in the discus with a regional qualifying throw. Junior Rae Backes continued her streak from the indoor season, winning the high jump with a regional qualifying height of 5-8.75. On the track, junior Justin Hazzard regionally qualified with his winning time of 51.82 in the 400 hurdles and junior Rob Watson won the steeplechase with a time of 9:09.18.
Freshman Jessica Bruha was victorious for the Rams in the 100 meters, while sophomore Emily Pearson won the 200 meters. Redshirt freshman Heather Loseke finished second and was the top collegian in the 1500 meters and redshirt freshman Niomi Ridge won the 400 hurdles. Running in her first steeplechase, freshman Kristen Hemphill won with a time of 11:33.63. Junior Katie Lloyd won the long jump, senior Amanda Huddleston-Miller was victorious in the triple jump and sophomore Ashleigh Morton won the pole vault.
For the men, Hazzard won both the 110 and 400 hurdles, marking the third straight season he has won both hurdle events at the Rob Upton Invitational. Sophomore Drew Morano won both the 200 and 400 meters, while senior Paul Michel won the 800 meters, redshirt freshman Jeff Wahl won the 1500 meters and Watson won the steeplechase. Lohse led a 1-2-3 sweep in the shot put with Trey Eder and Nate Heyrman finishing second and third, respectively. Heyrman also won the hammer throw, while Eder was second. Freshman David Eischeid won the long jump and sophomore Charles Johnson won the pole vault. The 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Eischeid, Denny Majerus, Collin Ferguson and Morano also crossed the finish line first, with a time of 41.57.
Colorado State will host the Glenn Morris Multi Events on Thursday and Friday, while the rest of the team will either travel to the Stanford Invitational or the Tom Benich Classic, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado.
