Track & Field Posts Nine More Regional Qualifying Marks

The Colorado State track & field team split into two squads over the weekend with five Rams competing in California at the Stanford Invitational and the rest of the team at the Tom Benich Classic in Greeley on the campus of Northern Colorado.
The men's team was extremely successful in the throwing events at the Tom Benich, with junior Nate Heyrman placing second overall and he was the top collegian in the hammer throw with a best throw of 182-0. Senior Jason Fearheiley was also the top collegian in the javelin and second overall with a throw of 183-3. Sophomore Jason Schutz finished second overall behind former Ram standout Casey Malone, regionally qualifying with a throw of 181-11 and senior Trey Eder was second overall and the top collegian in the shot put with his throw of 53-6.5.
Junior Haley Hunt was victorious in the women's hammer with a season-best and NCAA regional qualifying throw of 185-5, while sophomore Stacey Poulos was second, also regionally qualifying with her throw of 179-5. Senior Jaimee Troth won the shot put with a throw of 45-6.5.
Senior Amanda Huddleston-Miller regionally qualified with her winning jump of 40-6 and she also finished second in the long jump at 17-8.75. Junior Rae Backes continued her winning ways by clearing 5-8 in the high jump, while Collin Ferguson won the men's high jump at 6-4.75.
On the track, junior Justin Hazzard won the 110 meter hurdles with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 14.01, which is a personal best and ranks third all-time in school history. Senior Mike Horton was second with a time of 14.35. Hazzard also won the 400 hurdles with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 51.04, also a personal best and the fifth fastest in school history. Sophomore Drew Morano was second in the 200 meters, clocking a personal best 21.02, qualifying for regionals and ranking among the top 10 fastest times in school history. Junior Danielle Korb and freshman Kristen Hemphill finished third and fourth, respectively in the 1500 meters. Junior Megan Fox won the 400 meters with a time of 55.40 and was second in the 200 meters, clocking a 24.70.
At the Stanford Invitational, junior Rob Watson won the second heat of the steeplechase and was fifth overall late Friday evening with a personal best and regional qualifying time of 8:47.96 -- which ranks second on the school's charts. Senior Paul Michel narrowly missed the regional qualifying time in the 800 meters, finishing 13th in 1:50.69. Senior transfer Matt McKinney placed fourth in the shot put at 54-9.25 and was seventh in the discus at 172-6. Seniors Katie Hansen and Jill McCormick both competed in the discus, with Hansen finishing seventh at 163-3 and McCormick eighth at 158-0. McCormick betters her NCAA regional qualifying mark from last weekend.
Next weekend, the Rams will be in Boulder for the Colorado Invitational. The next home meet for Colorado State will be on April 22 when the Rams host the Jack Christiansen Invitational.
