Colorado State men's basketball head coach Dale Layer has announced the signing of three players. Tim Denson, Tyler Smith and Ryan Vermeulen signed a National Letters of Intent to play basketball at Colorado State in 2006-07.
Denson, a 6-1, 195 transfer from Fullerton College, helped the Hornets to a perfect 37-0 record in two seasons with the team. Denson averaged 14 points, three rebounds and two steals at Fullerton and was named MVP of the Antelope Valley Tournament as well as the Riverside Community College Wells Fargo Holiday Classic. He was first team all-league and state finals MVP at Fullerton as well.
Denson is a native of Corona, Calif., and a graduate of Santiago High School where he averaged 20 points and four assists as a senior. He was a two-time team MVP, league MVP as a senior and a two-time first team all-league selection. He earned all-county honors twice and all-CIF as a senior guiding his team to the school's first ever league championship.
Vermeulen, a 6-10, 250 senior at Modesto High School, was an honorable All-American, a first team all-league and all-district selection in his senior season. Vermeulen also earned all-league and all-district honors as a sophomore and junior at MHS.
Vermeulen helped Modesto to a 28-3 overall record and a 14-1 conference mark in 2006 while placing 2nd in the California Sectionals.
Smith, a 6-3, 200-pound guard from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., averaged 20.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists while hitting 68 three-pointers this past season for the Plainsmen. Smith was rated as the No. 59 player in the nation by Rivals Hoops after being named the Region IX Player of the Year in 2006 and was selected to play in the NJCAA All-Star Classic Game that will take place on April 22 in Kilgore, Texas.
Smith transferred to NJC from DePaul University where he played during the 2003-04 season after graduating from Douglass High School in Baltimore, Md. At DHS, Smith was named player of the year, all-metro first team and was a top 50 player in the nation.
The Rams now have six players that have signed National Letters of Intent. They join Alton Robinson, Jarrel Smith and Jake Nielson, who signed during the early signing period in November.
