PROVO, UTAH- Colorado State is in seventh place after day one of the PING Cougar Classic hosted by Brigham Young University. The Rams carded a 283, and followed up with 284 earning them a 567 two-round total at the Riverside Country Club, a par 72, 7,001 yard course.
Derrick Whiting is leading the Rams and is tied for 9th after carding two sup-par rounds, 70-68, for a two-round 138 total. Kevin McAlpine is in 19th place after carding a first round four-under 68, then an even-par 72 for a two-round 140 total. Nate Pettitt is one stroke behind his fellow senior McAlpine and is in a tie for 20th. Pettitt carded rounds of 72-69 for a two-round 141 total.
Aaron Weston is tied for 66th after carding rounds 73-75 for a 148 two-round total. Zen Brown is tied for 79th after carding rounds of 77-75 for a 152 two-round.
UNC Charlotte is leading the 16 team field with rounds of 276-275 giving them a 551 two-round total, five strokes ahead of Fresno State and Weber State, who both earned a 556 two-round total. Barry Schenk, of Weber State, is leading the individual field with 67-66=133.
Other Mountain West competitors include Air Force, 13th after day one, BYU, in 4th, UNLV, tied for 8th, Utah, in 14th and Wyoming, in 11th.
The Rams are looking for their tenth-straight top-10 finish. If the Rams are able to maintain their position they would tie their sixth all-time single season top-10 team finishes.
The tournament is set to conclude with 18 holes scheduled for Saturday.
