San Diego, Calif. - The Colorado State water polo team suffered a 7-6 loss to Sonoma State in the opening round of the 2006 Western Water Polo Association Championships in San Diego Friday.

Sonoma State jumped out to a 2-0 lead before CSU's Annie Quinn punched in a goal with just over one minute to play in the first to make the score 2-1 after the opening period. The teams traded goals in the second before SSU bumped its lead to 5-2 on goals by Roxanna McEwen and Chelsea Hennan midway through the third.

Colorado State's Laurien White then narrowed the gap to two goals at the end of the third with a late-period goal to make the score 5-3. White opened the final period with another goal to close the gap to one but the Seawolves kept the Rams at bay, scoring two more goals to the Rams' one to take a 7-5 lead with a minute to play.

CSU made a late-game effort to knot things up but could only muster one goal from White and fell by a final score of 7-6.

White led CSU with four goals while Quinn and Marisa Fernandez each had one.

CSU (15-21) falls to the consolation bracket of the tournament and will face Chapman Saturday at 9:45 a.m. MT.
