Hansen And Troth Earn Automatic Bids To NCAA Championship

On the final day of the NCAA Midwest Track and Field Regional, both seniors Jaimee Troth and Katie Hansen finished in the top five in their respective events to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships in Sacramento June 7-10. The men's team scored 18 points to finish in 12th place, while the women also tallied 18 points to finish 15th.
Troth threw a personal best in the hammer with her throw of 197-2 to finish second and automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship. Sophomore Stacey Poulos just missed automatically qualifying, finishing sixth with a throw of 192-7 and junior Haley Hunt finished 11th with a toss of 185-8. Senior Katie Hansen also automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship in the discus, placing fourth with a throw of 174-9. Fellow senior Jill McCormick was ninth at 168-3
Senior Amanda Miller jumped 39-6.5 in the triple jump to finish 20th overall. In the 1500 meters, junior Danielle Korb finished 10th with a time of 4:33.30. Freshman Kristen Hemphill placed eighth in the steeplechase with a personal best time of 10:50.47, which is also the second-fastest time in school history.
In the men's shot put, senior Matt McKinney, who yesterday qualified for the NCAA Championship in the discus, placed seventh with a put of 58-1.75, while junior Nate Heyrman, who qualified in the hammer yesterday, finished 11th at 56-11.25. Junior Magnus Lohse was 12th and junior Trey Eder placed 15th in the shot put. Senior Paul Michel finished 11th in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:55.99. Junior Justin Hazzard finished seventh in the 400 meter hurdles, running a 51.89. Freshman Scott Sanders ran a 9:19.53 to finish 11th in the steeplechase.
Troth, Hansen, McKinney and Heyrman will all compete at the NCAA Championship in Sacramento in two weeks. Junior Katie Lloyd ranks 12th in the heptathlon and will earn a bid to the meet, while junior Kevin Johnson ranks 24th in the decathlon and should also earn a bid. Both Eder and sophomore Stacey Poulos finished sixth during regional competition in the hammer and will await news of an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, as will several others who finished in the top eight over the weekend.
