Whiting Selected to Play in the 2006 NCAA West Regional

Indianapolis - The NCAA I Men's Golf Committee has selected Colorado State junior Derrick Whiting to play in the 2006 NCAA West Regional in Tucson, Ariz., May 18-20. The Tournament will be hosted by the University of Arizona at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club.

Whiting, a junior from Alexandria, Minn., led Colorado State with a 72.28 stroke average while ranking eighth in the Mountain West Conference in the category. Whiting was CSU's top finisher in the 2006 MWC Championship carding a three-round total of 220 to finish in a tie for 20th. Whiting posted two top 10 finishes in 2006 including a first place finish in the Rice Intercollegiate.

Whiting will compete in the 141-man field and is one of six individuals to make the West Regional. The 54-hole event will be played at Omni Tucson National's Catalina Course, a par 72, 7,200-yard layout. Eighteen holes will be played each day beginning Thursday, May 18. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. PDT. Tee times are to be announced.

Tournament seeding, according to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee, is as follows: 1. Florida, 2. Arizona State, 3. BYU, 4. East Tennessee State, 5. Baylor, 6. Alabama, 7. Arizona, 8. San Diego State, 9. North Carolina State, 10. Washington, 11. New Mexico, 12. Stanford, 13. Houston, 14. Pepperdine, 15. Louisville, 16. Denver, 17. Santa Clara, 18. New Mexico State, 19. Fresno State, 20. UC Irvine, 21. Nevada, 22. San Diego, 23. Cal Poly, 24. Western Kentucky, 25. Loyola Marymount, 26. Jackson State, 27. Bucknell.

The following six individuals were also selected to participate: Graham DeLaet, Boise State; Dustin Pimm, Utah; Chadd Coco, St. Mary's; Ryan Witz, Washington State; Ryan Wood, Long Beach State; Derrick Whiting, Colorado State.

CSU ends a string of 10 consecutive years making the tournament field as a team by not receiving a team bid in 2006.

The top 10 teams and two individuals in this event will qualify for the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, May 31-June 3, at the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The University of Portland will serve as the host institution.
