The Colorado State Men's Golf team will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete in the 52nd annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The Rams earned second place in their first tournament of the season, the Gene Miranda Invitational Sept. 9-10. The Tucker, hosted by New Mexico, will take place at the University Championship Course, a 7,350-yard, par-72 course. The 54-hole tournament will begin with 36 holes on Friday, and the last 18 holes will take place Sunday. Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Twenty-one teams will compete in the tournament, including six Mountain West teams: Air Force, BYU, CSU, New Mexico (A & B), UNLV, and Wyoming. The Ram golfers set to compete in the tournament are Riley Arp, Zen Brown, Dustin Morris, Aaron Weston and Derrick Whiting. Livestats will be available on both golobos.com and golfstat.com.
Rams Recap...
Colorado State earned a second-place team finish after carding rounds of 280-286-288 for an 854 three-round total. The second-place finish is their highest finish since the Rice Intercollegiate, Feb. 6-7, 2006. Every Ram golfer that competed in the tournament carded a sub-par round. Zen Brown carded the lowest round of the tournament, a 68, on the first day.
Marvelous Morris...
In his first collegiate tournament, Dustin Morris carded rounds of 72-70-69 to earn him a 211 three-round total and a tie for fourth place. Morris is tied with Zen Brown for the lowest stroke-average on the team. Morris and Brown are currently tied with Tom Whitney of Air Force for the lowest-stroke average in the Mountain West Conference, 70.33.
Believing in Brown...
Sophomore Zen Brown earned his second collegiate top five tournament finish at the Falcon Invitational. Brown carded rounds of 74-68-69 earning him a 211 three-round total and a tie with teammate Dustin Morris for fourth place. Brown matched his third-lowest stroke round, 68, in the second round of the tournament. As of Sept. 21, 2006, Brown and Morris are tied for first place in the Mountain West Conference for stroke average. The two hold a 70.33 stroke average, and are tied with Tom Whitney of Air Force.
2005 Tucker Intercollegiate...
Last year, Colorado State earned a 16th place team finish at the Tucker Intercollegiate. This marks the only time during the 2005-2006 season that CSU did not achieve a top-10 team finish. Colorado State carded rounds of 293-313-288 for a three-round 894 team total. Derrick Whiting was the lone Ram to earn a top-20 finish and tied for 17th place at the Tucker Intercollegiate, Sept. 16-17, 2005. Whiting carded rounds of 71-79-67 to earn a three-round 217. Brown earned a tie for 95th, his worst finish of the 2005-2006 season, after carding rounds of 77-82-77=236. Aaron Weston tied for 83rd place at the 2005 Tucker. He carded rounds of 77-79-75=231. UNLV won last year's tournament after posting an 851 three-round team total.
Ram Scholars...
CSU men's golfers Nate Pettitt and Derrick Whiting were selected to the GCAA Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar List this summer. Only juniors and seniors are eligible to be a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar and must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average. In addition, golfers must have under a 76.0 stroke average. Whiting registered a 3.363 GPA majoring in speech communications. He led CSU with a 72.21 stroke average in the 2005-06 season and was CSU's sole representative in the NCAA Regional Tournament where he finished 46th. He had five top-20 finishes.
Falcon Invitational...
Zen Brown and Dustin Morris tied with Tom Whitney of Air Force, and Alan Glynn of Xavier for fourth place. They were seven strokes away from first place winner Jason Kokrak of Xavier. Kokrak carded rounds of 79-69-65 for a 204 three-round total. Colorado State finished nine strokes away from tournament victor Xavier University. Xavier carded rounds of 286-286-273 for an 845 three-round total. Derrick Whiting tied for 45th place. He carded rounds of 71-72 on the first day of the tournament, and added a round of 78 on the final day. This earned him a 221 three-round total. Aaron Weston and Riley Arp tied for 54th place after earning a 223 three-round total. Weston carded rounds of 78-70-75, and Arp carded rounds of 69-79-75. Bryce Hanstad, who played as an individual in the tournament, recorded rounds of 82-76-70 for a 228 three-round total, and a tie for 84th.
