Ward in Second, Rams Eighth At Fighting Camel Spring Classic

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Colorado State senior Amber Ward is in a tie for second leading the Rams to a tie for eighth place after 18 holes of the Fighting Camel Spring Classic intercollegiate women's golf tournament on Monday at Keith Hills Country Club No. 1.
 
Ward fired an opening-round 73 matching her best-ever collegiate round and is just one stroke off leader Mary Mattson of Campbell.  Ward's 73 matches the Rams' eighth-best round of the year.

Junior Chelsea Benton fired an eight-over 80, good for 21st, while Stefanie Ferguson, competing as an individual, shot an 81.  Senior Megan Chapman is tied for 38th with an 82 while freshman Kasey Claussen (87) and redshirt freshman Natalie Stone (89) round out team scoring for the Rams.


Bidding to win its home spring tournament for the 10th time in 15 tries, Campbell leads second-place Illinois State by 15 strokes and third-place Wichita State by 17.  Richmond (318) and Gardner-Webb (319) round out the top five in the 15-school field.

CSU's team total of 322 is tied for eighth place with High Point University, 22 strokes off the lead.

 
The final round will begin with a 9:00 a.m. ET shotgun start on Tuesday.
