Pearson And Cure Take Top Two Spots

Colorado State juniors Emily Pearson and Tonya Cure swept the top two spots in the women's heptathlon at the California Invitational. Pearson provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a personal best two-day, seven-event total of 5,204 points, while Cure posted 4,966 points for second place.
Freshmen Sonni Russell and Kristen Kugler also finished 23rd and 25th. The field today had to fight through 40-mile an hour wind gusts that plagued the final 2 events of the day.
Pearson had 3,201 points after yesterday's competition and never trailed today en route to her second-straight victory in the heptathlon. In the long jump, she cleared 16-5.75, then threw 131-7 in the javelin and finished the day with a personal best time of 2:24.08 in the 800 meters.
Cure entered today with 2,810 points. She finished second in the long jump with a leap of 18-0.5, then heaved the javelin a personal best 125-3 and ran a 2:19.99 in the 800 meters. Cure narrowly missed her personal best of 4,994 points from last season's Mountain West Championship.
Russell finished with a career-best 4,097 points. She started the second day with a career-best 15-11.5 in the long jump. She then threw 85-4 in the javelin and rounded out the day by running a personal best 2:42.81 in the 800 meters.
Kugler finished with 4,073 points after jumping a personal record 16-6.5 in the long jump, throwing 100-11 in the javelin and clocking in with a 2:24.94 in the 800 meters.
Freshman Doug Dieker also competed in the Cal Invitational Decathlon, finishing 16th overall with 5,801 points. Dieker started the second day with a 17.29 in the 100 meter hurdles. Het threw 113-10 in the javelin, cleared 13-11 in the pole vault, threw 116-11 in the javeling and ran a 5:07.82 in his first collegiate decathlon.
The CSU track & field team will compete on Saturday at the Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State University. Several members of the throws corp will compete on Friday evening at the Mesa Classic, hosted by Mesa Community College.
