Los Angeles, Calif. - The Colorado State women's water polo team earned a decisive 10-2 win over Chapman before falling to Cal State Bakersfield by a score of 10-7. The games were played in the first day of the Loyla Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles Friday.
In game one, CSU broke open a tight game with five unanswered goals in the third and four unanswered in the fourth to earn a 10-2 victory over Chapman. Andrea Lugo had eight saves in the win while Shannon Kohl and Monica Schuh led the way offensively with three goals each. Sarah Ostling had two goals in the game while Kailin Custy and Emily McCullough rounded out Ram scoring with one goal each.
In the second game, CSU trailed 8-7 in the fourth quarter until CS Bakersfield made it a two-goal game and then added a last-second goal to topple CSU 10-7. Senior Laurien White notched two goals in the game while Ostling, Kohl, McCullough, Schuh and Annie Quinn all had one. Krystyna McCright had seven saves in goal for the Rams.
"We played very tough against a very good team who beat us fairly handily the first time we played them," commented CSU Head Coach John Mattos referring to CSU's 12-6 loss to CSB earlier this year. "We had opportunities to tie it a couple of times late in the game but couldn't get it done."
CSU (12-15) will face a pair of nationally ranked teams in the final day of the tournament. The Rams face No. 15 UC San Diego before matching up with host school No. 10 Loyola Marymount.
