Three Rams automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships after the first day of the NCAA Midwest Regional track meet in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday.

For the men, junior Jason Schutz captured second place and a trip to the championships in the discus by throwing a personal-best 192-07. On the Women's side, seniors Janay DeLoach and Nicole Feest each earned a spot in the NCAA Championships in the long jump and 5000 meter run, respectively. DeLoach leaped to a 20-7.25, while Feest crossed the finish line in the 5000 in a personal-best time of 16:20.86.

Schutz was also the top finisher for the Rams in the hammer throw, placing sixth with a throw of 195-10. Sophomore Alex Godell (195-02) and seniors Trey Eder (184-07) and Nate Heyrman (170-02) finished seventh, 13th and 22nd, respectively in the hammer throw. Freshman thrower Cameron Carter placed 11th in the discus for Colorado State, hurling a 173-08.

Senior hurdler Justin Hazzard competed in both the 110 and 400 hurdles preliminary races. In the 110, Hazzard missed qualifying with a time of 14.30 in 13th place, but he bounced back to post a 51.59 in the 400 hurdles, finishing in seventh and qualifying for the finals.

Junior Emily Pearson competed in the Javelin and the 100 hurdle prelims. She placed 18th in the Javelin with a toss of 125-05 and missed qualifying for the finals in the 100 hurdles, clocking in at 13.95 in 12th place.

Seniors Rae Backes and Danielle Korb each placed 13th in their respective events. Backes recorded a jump of 5-7.25 in the high jump, while Korb clocked in with a personal-best 4:25.90 but narrowly missed qualifying in the 1500 meter prelims. Freshman thrower Jennifer Ugochukwu posted a 46-1.5 in the shot put to place 20th.
