Watson Becomes Fourth Ram to Qualify for NCAA Championships

Senior Rob Watson capture first place in the steeplechase on day two of the NCAA Midwest Regional in Des Moines, Iowa. Watson becomes the fourth member of the CSU track and field team to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Watson, who was the top-ranked athlete in the Midwest Region in the steeplechase entering the race, posted a time of 8:49.38 to capture first place on Saturday. He joins junior Jason Schutz (discus) and fellow seniors Janay DeLoach (long jump) and Nicole Feest (5000 meter run) to represent Colorado State at the NCAA Championship meet.
Senior Justin Hazzard narrowly missed automatic qualifying in the 400 hurdles, posting a time of 51.93 to finish in seventh place, while senior Nate Heyrman was held out of the men's shot put.
On the women's side, senior Haley Hunt, junior Stacey Poulos and sophomore Kristen Hemphill also competed on day two, but failed to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. Hunt captured ninth place in the hammer throw with a toss of 186-06 and placed 19th in the Discus with a throw of 147-10. Puolos fouled in all three attempts in the hammer throw.
Hemphill finished in sixth place in the steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:29.48, missing automatic qualifying by just one place.
The NCAA Championships will be held June 6-9, 2007 at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif., and will be hosted by Sacramento State University.
