FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State Volleyball defeated No. 13 Ohio State in three games (30-22, 30-25, 30-21) which showcased a dominating performance in the CSU home opener at the Coors Classic hosted at Moby Arena. Jaime Strauss hit .438 from the outside with 12 kills. Sharing the kill lead was Mekana Barnes, also with 12, who also notched eight blocks.
The Rams started out Game 1 in control, taking service on the first play and jumping to a 9-3 advantage early over the Buckeyes. CSU allowed Ohio State to get within two at 12-10 but then went on an 18-12 run to finish out the match. Jaci Davisson made her Ram debut, serving five times and notching a pair of digs in the opening game. CSU hit .324 and held the Buckeyes to .171 hitting.
Game 2 began with the Rams battling closely with Ohio State before going on a 5-2 run that gave CSU the three-point advantage. The two teams played back and forth with Ohio State not able to gain any advantage. The Rams took Game 2 with a resounding kill by Barnes. CSU went to the locker room with the 2-0 match advantage for the first time this season. The hitting in the second game was again powerful but the blocks were the story as the Rams put up eight in the two games.
CSU came out in Game 3 on a mission to win. The net was dominated by Colorado State as it knocked down nine blocks including solo blocks by Barnes and Amanda Fahnestock. The Rams hit .229 as they grabbed a two-point advantage then expanded the lead to the final margin of nine points for their first win of the year.
Barnes hit a blistering .526 to lead four players over .400 hitting. Six players had at least three blocks in the match. Ashley Fornstrom hit .500 and had 42 assists on the night. CSU tallied a season-best 38 digs led by libero Katelin Batten with 16.
The Rams will conclude the Coors Classic Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Pacific at Moby Arena. Ohio State and Pacific will play Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
