The Colorado State women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Wyoming Invitational Friday, finishing 3-7 in singles and 1-2 in doubles.
The tournament consists of three flights of singles, Flight 1 (gold), Flight 2 (brown) and Flight 3 (white), and two flights of doubles, Flight 1 (gold) and Flight 2 (brown).
In the gold singles flight, Caitlin Fluegge defeated Christen Monreal of Air Force, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3) in the first round, then fell to Corina Lazar of Wyoming, 6-2, 6-2. Anette Pohjalainen fell to Stephanie Jaspar of Montana State, 6-0, 6-1, in Round 1. She went on to defeat Ashley Schapper of Weber State, 6-2, 6-3 in the backdraw and will compete in Round 3 Saturday.
In the brown singles flight, Kirsten Stople lost to Greyce Farias of Weber State, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-0 in Round 1; she will compete in the second round of the backdraw Saturday. Rui Xu dropped her first-round match to Carly Van Hollen of Wyoming, 6-1, 6-3 and also will play in Round 2 of the backdraw Saturday. Greer Satherlie earned a victory over Keya Adamson of Weber State, 6-2, 6-1, then fell to Jamie Nelson of Wyoming 6-2, 6-4, in the second round of the maindraw.
In the white singles flight, Sarah Seltsam lost to Allison Fey in the first round, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, and will compete in Round 2 of the backdraw Saturday. Manar Al-Jazzaf fell to Sammy Sarkis of Air Force, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3; likewise, she will compete Saturday in Round 2 of the backdraw. Katie Brown received a bye for the first round, and will compete Saturday in the second round of the maindraw.
In the gold doubles flight, Fluegge/Pohjalainen were defeated by Griffin/Villegas of Montana State, 8-1, but will compete in Round 2 of the backdraw Saturday. Seltsam/Stople received a bye for Round 1 and will compete in their first match in the second round of the maindraw Saturday.
In the brown doubles flight, Al-Jazzaf and Brown fell to Agarycheva/Ciarvella of Northern Colorado, 8-6, and will compete in Round 2 of the backdraw Saturday.
In the brown doubles flight, Satherlie/Xu earned a win over Cassman/Eromin of Air Force, 8-6; they will compete Saturday in Round 2 of the maindraw.
Play resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
