Tennis competes in Day 1 of BYU Invitational

In singles, the Rams came out hard, winning all of its first four matches in the top singles bracket. Seeded fifth in the top bracket, junior Lauren Strasburger received a bye in the first round then advanced to the quarterfinals after dropping her first set to Elle Carney of BYU, 2-6, only to come back and defeat her in three. Strasburger will face Jana Mackova of Boise State Friday in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Caitlin Fleugge was seeded second in the second bracket, and put on a good show, defeating Alyssa Pyne of Weber, 6-0, 6-0, but then fell to Dee Dee Nelson of Utah, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4.
In doubles, sophomores Laura Neal and Anette Pohjalainen earned a first round bye and went on to defeat Elizaveta Ezhova and Chie Hayasaka of BYU, 8-4. Neal and Pohjalainen will represent the Rams tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
"For the first day, the team played very well against top competition," head coach Jon Messick said. "We beat BYU twice in singles and once in doubles, and to come away with three wins against BYU is great.
Play resumes Friday at 11 a.m. MST.
