Tennis sends doubles team to semifinals

The Colorado State women's tennis team completed its second day of competition at the BYU Invitational Friday. The Rams will be represented in the semifinals by Laura Neal and Anette Pohjalainen who will compete in doubles.
In singles, the Rams finished the day with a 7-5 record. After winning her quarterfinals match, junior Lauren Strasburger advanced to the semifinals, falling to top-seeded Liz Ferris of Utah in straight sets.
In the consolation bracket of the second singles flight, junior Greer Satherlie earned wins in both her quarterfinals and semifinals matches. After defeating Kelli Lindley of Weber State in straight sets, she defeated Hailey Swenson of Utah State. Satherlie will face Cheyenne Reveche of Utah Saturday in the finals.
Also in the consolation round, Anette Pohjalainen beat Greyce Farias of Weber State in a match that lasted over three hours, coming out on top, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4. Pohjalainen then fell to Leigh Walsh of Utah, 6-3, 6-1. After a total of five matches, Pohjalainen then competed in her doubles match.
In doubles, after falling behind seven games to four, sophomores Laura Neal and Pohjalainen turned up their game, winning five straight games to defeat Andrea Maughan and Jane Krynchkova of Utah and advancing to the semifinals. The duo will face the No. 3 seed in Jocelyn Jensen and Dolly Chang of BYU Saturday.
"To get up for that physically and mentally and come from behind and win, it was great for Anette," Head Coach Jon Messick commented. "The doubles win was an amazing effort and great to watch.
"Everyone has been competitive all the way through. It has been very hot here and the team has done a good job handling it."
Play resumes Saturday at 9:30 when Neal and Pohjalainen enter the semifinals, followed by Satherlie's match at 10 a.m.
