Strasburger earns victory at CU Invite

BOULDER, Colo.- - The Colorado State women's tennis team finished competition at the CU Invitational Sunday. The Rams earned a 3-1 singles record while going 1-3 in doubles.
In the main singles draw, after dropping her Round 1 match Friday, Lauren Strasburger picked up two consecutive wins to put her in the finals of the backdraw. Facing Christi Baxley of Oklahoma, Strasburger won the match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, to win the backdraw. Her 3-1 record at the CU Invite moves her season tournament record to 5-2. Also in the maindraw, senior Hilary Tyler picked up her second win of the invite, fourth on the year, defeating Tabatha Knopp of Nothern Colorado in a one-sided match, 6-0, 6-2.
In the lower singles flight, sophomore Anette Pohjalainen beat Christiane Pheil of Colorado, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Junior Greer Satherlie lost to Brittany Baldy of Oklahoma, 6-1, 6-2. Advancing to 8-5 on the year, Satherlie holds the Rams' most wins in singles play this fall.
In doubles play, the Rams did not fair as well, compiling a 1-3 record. The team's lone win came from Strasburger/Tyler who defeated Constantinescu/Kalashnikova of Oklahoma, 8-5. The pair then fell to Esposito/Belassi of Colorado, 8-4. Satherlie/Pohjalainen dropped both their matches, first to Orr/Eckel of Oklahoma, 8-2, then to Probert/Torres Torres of Colorado, 8-4. In the tournament, the Rams finished with a 2-4 doubles record.
"To finish off the tournament winning three of four singles matches, it was good for the team and good to get wins over CU and Oklahoma," Head Coach Jon Messick said. "I am proud of the way the team played on the singles court today."
The Rams return to the court Oct. 12, when they enter the Air Force Academy Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
