FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State water polo program on Thursday signed Caroline Young to a National Letter of Intent. Head Coach John Mattos made the announcement.

Young, a 5-foot-8 athlete out of Lighthouse Point, Fla., is a first-team All-American who also competed for U.S. Water Polo.

"We're very, very excited to welcome Caroline to Colorado State," assistant coach Mike Moody said. "Her U.S. Water Polo experience is very valuable because they use the same Xs and Os that we use here. She's going to know our system very well right from the start."

Currently a senior at Saint Andrew's High School in Boca Raton, Fla., Young has lettered in four sports, in addition to competing in the triathlon. She will graduate as a four-year letterwinner in water polo, adding to her five letters in cross country, three in swimming and one in track. And, if that wasn't enough, Young in 2007 ranked 15th in the nation among 16-17-year olds in the triathlon.

"She's a very physically fit athlete," Moody said, noting she swam sprints as a swimmer. "She's a strong, aggressive player in the water, and has excellent speed, strength and awareness. She's also a good student, and an all-around great player."

Named at the conclusion of her junior year this past spring as the 2008 South Florida Sun-Sentinel Player of the Year, she has earned first-team all-district honors each season since her freshman campaign. With U.S. Water Polo, she also competed on the Southeast Cadet Zone Team (2007), the Southeast Junior Zone Team (2008) and the Junior National Training Team (2008).

A left-handed shooter, she will fit in well when she arrives in Fort Collins for the 2010 season.

"She will add a lot more depth to an already strong side of the pool," Moody said. "She'll play on the same side as Ali Pavlik and Emily Chambers. Having a lefty in water polo is really the same philosophy as having a lefty on the pitcher's mound in baseball. It just brings an added dimension. It makes us more dangerous."

Young, who made the dean's list and head master's list as a student-athlete, is expected to major in bio-medical, equine or animal sciences at Colorado State. Her mother, Elizabeth, swam collegiately at Alabama, and her aunt, Jill, qualified for the 1980 Olympic games in the Breaststroke and Butterfly.
