AURORA, Colo. - The Colorado State water polo team entered the Colorado Cup tournament just hoping to prove that it wasn't immune to winning.
The Rams ended up learning that winning is not something they will get tired of anytime soon.
Outscoring their opponents by a combined 69-6 margin, the Rams left the inaugural Colorado Cup victorious and with a lot to be excited about. Colorado State dominated the two-day weekend competition at Hinkley High School.
"I was very happy with the girls' performance," assistant coach Mike Moody said.
The Rams started off Saturday by winning against the CSU women's club team, 22-0, and finished the evening by beating Colorado College, 28-4.
The third and final game of the weekend for the Rams was against Air Force, which resulted in a 19-2 win.
The wins and scoring were both complete team efforts.
"It was an even distribution from everyone," Moody said.
All players played in each game, including all three freshmen. Also, Krystyna McCright and Kayley Provow evenly split time in goal over the weekend.
Junior Shannon Kohl also got some limited minutes during the tournament. Kohl underwent major labrum surgery in May, and the coaches were pleased with her performance.
Lone senior and team captain Emily Chambers also played well for the Rams.
"She did a great job of leading and organizing," Moody said.
Although these exhibition games officially meant nothing toward the Rams' 2009 record, they meant a lot toward learning and confidence-building.
"We still have a ways to go," Moody said. "But we're headed in the right direction. We're going to win some games this season."
