Husker Invite…
This weekend the Rams head to Lincoln, Neb., to participate in the Husker Invite, hosted by the University of Nebraska at the Devaney Natatorium. The meet begins on Thursday, and closes Sunday.
At this point last year, Colorado State was 6-0 going into the Husker Invite and finished in second place. This season, they have a strong 6-3 record and hope to perform just as well as last year, if not better.
This year’s Husker Invite is the largest in the school’s history with nine participating teams. The schools traveling to Lincoln are Iowa State, Nebraska-Omaha, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Rice, South Dakota State and CSU.
Quoting Head Coach John Mattos…
On what he’d like the team to accomplish at the Husker Invite:
“I’d like to see some fast swimming from our girls. Season bests should be the norm and since it’s our first prelim/final meet, I’m hoping we see some excellent racing at night. It would be nice to see us in the top three as a team and competing for championships in individual events and relays.”
On facing North Texas and Arkansas for the second time in two weeks:
“It will be good to swim against North Texas again. They’re a young team on the rise and are well-coached. We’re also competing against Arkansas again and that should really raise the competitive level of the meet.”
On the length of the meet:
“The meet is three and-a-half days long. It begins Thursday at 5 p.m. and ends Sunday afternoon. It’ll be a challenge but I don’t anticipate that we’ll lose our edge. This is a very similar format to the MWC championships so three and-a-half days of fast swimming and great diving needs to be a test that we all pass. The Husker is just like a review session.”
Meet Structure…
Thursday is the first session, beginning at 4 p.m., and Friday morning at 9 a.m. is the preliminary round, followed by the finals at 4 p.m. On Saturday prelims begin at 8 a.m. with a finals session at 3 p.m. The meet will conclude on Sunday with a 7 a.m. prelim round and finals at 12 p.m. All times are MST.
Last Week…
CSU had the weekend off last week after a long previous weekend in Texas. CSU (4-1) visited TCU, where the Rams suffered their first loss of the season, and the next day went to North Texas for the Mean Green Duals, where they split the day finishing 2-2 with dual victories over host North Texas (189-111) and New Mexico State (160-140). SMU (207-93) and Arkansas (210.5-89.5) defeated the Rams.
MWC standings...
The Rams’ first conference loss of the season at TCU puts CSU (4-1) in fourth place in the Mountain West Conference standings. Wyoming and BYU are tied for first place with records of 2-0 in the MWC. Utah (1-0) is just ahead of CSU in third place. TCU (2-2), San Diego State (2-4) UNLV (1-3), New Mexico (1-4) and Air Force (0-4), round out standings.
