FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Jake Linton scored 24 points and hit five three-pointers and Bill Richardson posted 25 points and nine rebounds to lead Saint Martin’s to an 83-76 upset win over Colorado State on Monday night at Moby Arena.
The Rams, just two days removed from nearly knocking off a Big Ten opponent, could never get anything going offensively and didn’t have an answer for the up-tempo Saints.
“We’ve been there and done that,” said Rams Head Coach Tim Miles. “We need to execute and defend well and we did neither of those tonight. We had a bad shootaround today in pregame. We were just bad all day.”
Linton scored seven of the Saints’ final nine points and Saint Martin’s hit each of its final eight free throws in the last 41 seconds to ice the win.
Colorado State was playing without its starting backcourt of senior guards Willis Gardner (left ankle sprain) and Marcus Walker (sore left ankle) and it showed. CSU looked stagnant on offense and lethargic on defense.
“Saint Martin’s absolutely ran circles around us,” said Miles. “They ran and dictated everything. We have to go out and do absolutely a better job in our defense. We have to execute our offense better and more than anything, we have to have a winning mentality.”
Andre McFarland was the lone Ram to shine on the night as he poured in a career-high 23 points on 8-11 shooting from the field, including 4-5 from three-point range. He also added a career-high tying 10 rebounds.
The Saints took control of the game with a 10-1 run that gave them a 65-58 lead with 5:06 remaining in the game. During that run, the Saints held the Rams scoreless for nearly four minutes. An Andy Ogide layup with 3:38 left in the game gave the Rams some life as they got within five points at 65-60 but CSU couldn’t maintain the momentum. Down the stretch, Jesse Carr connected on a pair of deep three-pointers on his way to a career-high 13 points but it wasn’t enough for the Rams.
