FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State freshman Zahkai Brown was selected Thursday as the Mountain West Conference Co-Golfer of the Month, sharing the honor with fellow freshman Johan de Beer from TCU.
Brown, from Arvada, Colo., had a 69.56 stroke average over nine rounds of action in October and led Colorado State to three tournament titles. The freshman captured his first collegiate tournament at the Del Walker Invitational held in Long Beach, Calif., Oct. 16-17, after carding a 17-under-par 196 (66-63-67) on the 6,633-yard Virginia Country Club Course. He was the only golfer out of 74 participants to shoot double-figures below par, winning the event by eight strokes over teammate Dustin Morris (9-under, 204). Brown’s second-round score of 63 tied the school record for lowest single round, while the three-round total of 196 is tied for second-lowest all-time at Colorado State.
In other October action, Brown finished eighth at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate and 10th at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational. In the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif., he fired a 4-over 220 (76-71-73) on the 7,305-yard Classic Club Course. In his final event of the month at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational, Brown shot a 6-under 210 (70-72-68) on the 6,687-yard Willow Glen Course.
Brown and the rest of the men’s golf team completed the fall half of their schedule with four team titles in five fall tournaments. The team returns to the links Feb. 7 against Northern Colorado in Phoenix, Ariz.
