FORT COLLINS, Colo.- Colorado State is coming together as a team, playing stronger, and in the last game of weekend Hilton Invitational, the Rams finally got a win.
In the consolation game Sunday afternoon at the Edora Pool Ice Center (EPIC), the Rams beat UC Santa Cruz, 13-11. CSU now holds a 2-1 conference record. The Rams are 2-8 overall.
"This tournament was a success," said Head Coach John Mattos. "We built our confidence, both on offense and defense. We were able to move the ball more. Most of all, we played together."
The Rams were down 5-3 in the second to the Banana Slugs, but freshman Ali Pavlik scored two of the next three goals and the Rams never looked back. Pavlik had four goals total.
Freshman Andrea Victoria came out aggressively; she had her first career hat trick, scoring four goals. Victoria had multiple steals and moved the ball well.
Alexandra Eason made her first career goal. Sarah Ostling and Annie Quinn also had two goals each.
Sophomore goalie Krystyna McCright topped her single-game career high with 16 saves. She was strong and aggressive in the goal. She also had two steals.
"We are moving the ball and controlling the ball much better," Mattos said. "A 2-3 record for this weekend is excellent."
The Rams faced Marist's great defense again Sunday morning at EPIC.
"We are playing better (than Saturday) and playing stronger defense, but we can't get our shots in the goal," said Mattos after the first game.
McCright had one steal and eight saves.
"We are making better decisions, have more control, and a stronger defense," Mattos said.
No. 1 seed Bucknell played No. 2 seed in the championship match. Bucknell won 12-8. They went 5-0 in the tournament.
Next up for the Rams Feb. 29 they will travel to UC Santa Cru
