FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Despite junior Amaka Uzomah's sixth straight double-figure rebounding game and senior Sara Hunter's 13 points, Colorado State (2-25, 0-14 MWC) could not overcome its 29 turnovers Saturday against San Diego State (15-12, 6-9 MWC) in Moby Arena. The Aztecs beat the Rams 76-56, scoring 39 of those points off Rams' turnovers.
"There are a number of things that I feel we've gotten better at," Head Coach Jen Warden said. "It was the turnover column that killed us tonight."
The Rams swarmed the basket after every shot and out-rebounded the Aztecs 43-27. The Rams pulled down 23 offensive rebounds which turned into 19 second chance points. Uzomah grabbed seven of her 14 rebounds off the offensive glass. Sophomore Juanise Cornell had five offensive rebounds to add to her nine total points and junior Carine Reimink added four offensive boards.
The Rams struggled to score early, making only six field goals in the first half and went into the locker room down 21-44 at halftime.
The second half saw the Rams and Aztecs battle neck and neck. CSU outscored their opponent in the second half, 35-32, but couldn't cut into the halftime deficit.
Hunter's 13 points were a team high. Freshman Elle Queen added nine points. Cornell and Reimink each contributed six points.
The Rams will play their final home game of the season Wednesday night against Utah. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Moby Arena. Prior to tipoff, the Rams will honor the careers of seniors Sara Hunter and Kelly Rae Finley.
