WHAT ELSE IS NEW? Of the Rams' six opponents this weekend, four are nationally ranked and another received votes in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association poll. Six of CSU's previous 18 games, or one in every three, have been against ranked competition. In addition to conference foe UCSD in a single game at the Tritons' home pool, this weekend the Rams meet San Diego State, Long Beach State, Cal State Bakersfield, Pacific and Princeton. CSU will see non-conference competition in four of its five tournament games. Bakersfield is the only WWPA foe the Rams will face in the SDSU tourney. UC San Diego is 9-12 overall and split its games at the Loyola Marymount tourney last weekend. The Tritons won Friday against Cal State Bakersfield and won Saturday against Sonoma State. On Friday, they were defeated by No. 7 UC Davis in a close 5-4 game and lost Saturday to Santa Clara in a close 5-4 game as well. No. 6 San Diego State (16-2) is coming off a three-game winning streak and is hoping to play well at home. For the Aztecs, Anna Gonzales is the leading scorer with 40 goals for the season. No. 13 Long Beach State is 8-9 overall and lost last week to Arizona State. Senior Dayna Wawrzynski is the leading scorer for the 49ers andhad two goals against the Sun Devils. Cal State Bakersfield is 11-9 overall and went 3-1 last weekend at the LMU tourney. The Roadrunners beat Sonoma State (8-3), Santa Clara (7-6) and Chapman (14-3), but fell to UC San Diego (11-6). Pacific is coming off a four-game losing streak and enters 3-12 overall. Like the Rams, the Tigers have a tough schedule this season, including recent losses to No. 4 USC, No. 13 Long Beach State, and No. 9 UC Irving. No. 19 Princeton is 7-5 overall and lost last weekend at the Elite Six Tournament in Maryland, against No. 12 Michigan and No. 20 Indiana. Sophomore Lauren Sabb is the leading scorer with 24 goals this season for the Tigers.
RAMS CAN'T SNEAK BY Colorado State's water polo team continues to face the nation's best. The Rams ended the Loyola Marymount Tournament with a 1-3 record last weekend, and fell to 5-13 overall. "We played solid, tight and overall extremely well," said Head Coach John Mattos. "We're able to compete with the nationally ranked teams from start to finish." CSU knocked off Chapman, but lost to host LMU, UC Davis and Sonoma State. In the loss to LMU, the tournament opener, CSU fell behind early and never threatened. The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead before the Rams scored early in the second half. CSU closed Saturday on a strong note, however, with a convincing 11-goal win over Chapman. On Saturday morning, the Rams faced No. 7 UC Davis, also picked to win the WWPA. On Saturday afternoon the Rams faced conference foe Sonoma State, whom the Rams beat the previous weekend at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest, but couldn't pull away with a win, losing 7-5.
