LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Colorado State's water polo team split its two games on the opening day of the Loyola Marymount Invitational Friday at LMU's Burns Aquatics and Recreation Center.
The Rams opened with a 13-2 setback Friday morning against the host Lions, the No. 11-ranked team in the nation, but rebounded to dispatch Chapman, 15-4. Both contests were against conference foes.
Colorado State's record now is 5-11, but the team continues to own a winning conference mark, 5-4 in the Western Water Polo Association. The Rams have battled through one of the most difficult schedules in the country. Including LMU, five of CSU's 16 games to date have been against ranked opponents, and two others became ranked after they played the Rams.
In the loss to LMU, the tournament opener, CSU fell behind early and never threatened. The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead before the Rams' Shannon Kohl put her team on the board early in the third quarter. Senior Annie Quinn scored just 3 minutes later to cut the lead to 7-2, but the Lions netted the game's final six goals.
CSU closed the day on a strong note, however, with a convincing 11-goal win over Chapman. Freshman Orsi Nadasdy led the team with a four goals, an early career high. The utility player from Columbus, Ohio, had just one goal on the season entering the tournament. Another talented freshman, goalie Kayley Provow, played the full game and registered five saves. Both Emily Chambers and Andrea Victoria posted hat tricks with three scores each, while Sarah Ostling scored twice and Alexandra Eason, Quinn and Ali Pavlik had one goal. Ostling and Kohl each scored twice in the first stanza, helping the Rams build a 4-0 advantage.
The Rams get another ranked foe in their early morning opener Saturday, No. 7 UC Davis at 9:30 MT. CSU closes the two-day tournament with a rematch against Sonoma State at 4:30 p.m. MT. The Rams topped Sonoma State, 12-8, at the Santa Cruz Slugfest tournament last weekend. The meeting with Davis will mark the teams' first this season.
