ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico Lobos (17-12, 9-7 MWC) jumped out to 16-3 lead over the game's first 7 minutes and Colorado State (2-27, 0-16 MWC) was unable to recover, eventually falling, 76-45, on Saturday afternoon.
In front of 10,171 fans at "The Pit" on Senior Day, UNM seniors Dionne Marsh and Brandi Kimble did not disappoint, leading the team in scoring and rebounding, respectively. Marsh, who needed just 11 points to set the school scoring record, tallied a game-high 26 points and pulled down six rebounds. Marsh pulled down 11 rebounds to lead all players.
Senior guard Sara Hunter led the Rams, along with junior forward Carine Reimink, scoring nine points in the contest. Junior Amaka Uzomah, the MWC's second-leading rebounder in conference games, pulled down a team-most nine boards for the Rams.
The Rams' offensive struggles in the first half translated to just 3-for-22 shooting (13.6 percent) from the floor and a 40-13 halftime deficit. However, the Rams fought back in the second half, opening on a 15-8 run to cut the Lobos' lead to 20 points, 48-28, with 14:53 remaining. The Lobos answered with a 9-0 run of their own to keep the Rams from getting back into the contest.
Sophomore forward Juanise Cornell keyed the Rams' comeback effort with seven points, all in the second half, and pulled down five rebounds. Freshman forward Elle Queen recorded seven rebounds in the game.
The Rams head to Las Vegas, Nev., for an opening-round matchup in the 2008 Phillips 66 Mountain West Conference Basketball Championships. The Rams will face either Air Force (10-17, 4-11 MWC) or UNLV (8-20, 4-11 MWC) on Tuesday at the Thomas & Mack Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
