ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Colorado State women's golf team is in third place after Day 1 of the BYU Dixie Classic at the par-72, 6,151-yard Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. The Rams shot a two-round total of 608, finishing the first day of the tournament at 32-over-par.
Heading up the Rams at the Dixie Classic is freshman Cecilia Edlund in a tie for sixth place. Edlund shot a season-low and personal-best 69 (-3) in Round 1 to momentarily hold on to a tie for the tournament lead, carding four birdies, including back-to-back on the par-4 17th and 18th holes, before notching three more birdies in Round 2 en route to a two-round total of 149 (+5). Junior Stefanie Ferguson (72-79--151) and sophomore Kasey Claussen (73-78--151) follow closely, tied for eighth place. Ferguson returned to action after dealing with a sprained foot on Sunday at the MountainView Collegiate.
"It was fun to watch Cecilia play today," said Head Coach Angie Hopkins of the Rams' performance. "Her putts were dropping and she played very well. With Stefanie playing with a hurt foot, for her to shoot a 72 in that first round really shows some guts."
Freshman Kayley Kempton (80-77--157) and sophomore Natalie Stone (81-81--162) are tied for 25th and 38th, respectively.
"We're still a young team and learning with each tournament," added Hopkins. "It's just a matter of time before we put four solid scores together, but any time you have three players in the Top 10, you have to be happy about that."
The tournament will conclude, beginning Wednesday morning, with live scoring available at www.GolfStat.com.
