Rams win on snowy track

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - On a day in which the snow flew from the start of the steeplechase through the early afternoon, the Colorado State track and field men's and women's teams won the Jack Christiansen Invitational, the first scored meet of the season for the Rams. CSU's women earned 180 points, 58.5 ahead of second place Northern Colorado, while the men earned 181 points to finish 20 points ahead of MWC rival Air Force.
"Challenging weather conditions all day with the high winds and sleet affected all the athletes," said Head Coach Brian Bedard. "It really made it challenging for the technical events and the lap races. I think we got a little something done today. We had a good meet all things considered."
Two athletes battled the cold to earn regional qualifying marks. Tanesha Johnson won the triple jump with a leap of 40-08.25. Cameron Carter took first in the discus throw on his first throw of the day, with a toss of 175-05.
Learsha Jones had a victorious day, finishing first in two events and second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.27 seconds. Janay DeLoach, Johnson, Jones and Emily Pearson won the 4x100-meter relay in 46.84. In the 100-meter hurdles Jones finished with a time of 14.39 and Niomi Ridge placed third with a time of 14.39.
The women dominated through the wind in the track events. In the 200-meter dash DeLoach finished first with a time of 24.26, followed shortly after by second-place Johnson, in 24.62. Danielle Rawlings finished second in the steeplechase with a time of 11:05.22. Marissa Saunders won the 800-meter run in 2:16.32 and Heather Loseke finished third in 2:18.86. Ridge finished the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.95 and Deanne Emig finished in 1:08.72, taking second and sixth place for the Rams. Teresa Bell, Emig, Keri Ogden and Leslie Peterson took fourth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 4:12.84.
The Rams were successful in the field events as well. DeLoach won the long jump with a leap of 18-07.25. Ashleigh Morton earned first place and Kate Colvin took second in the pole vault with vaults of 12-01.50 and 11-07.75. In the discus Hilary Fraser threw 144-07 and finished second, and Emily Geubelle earned fourth with a toss of 143-04. Jennifer Ugochukwu tossed the shot put 43-04.50 feet and placed third. With a throw of 42-00.75, Stacey Robben finished in fourth in the shot put. Sonni Russell jumped 5-05.00 in the high jump to place fifth.
In the track events, Ryan Friese won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.07. Kurtis Vanatta finished the steeplechase in 9:55.40 and took second. Brian Fox, Josh Murphy, Sulaiman Sayyid and Andy Stenzel finished the 4x100-meter relay in 42.15 seconds and placed second as well. In the 200-meter dash Cole Tucker, Fox and Sayyid placed second, third and fourth with respective times of 21.67, 21.72 and 22.10. Fox and Tucker earned second and fourth in the 400-meter dash with times of 49.68 and 50.42. Sayyid took second in the 100-meter dash finishing in 10.80. Nigel Joseph finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.81. Bobby Potrykus placed fourth in the 800-meter run in 1:54.06. Kip Taylor took third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:05.01.
The men were successful in the field events with three athletes taking first in their event. Alex Godell won the hammer throw with a mark of 197-02. Nnamdi Agwu won the triple jump with a jump of 45-10.75 followed by second-place athlete Ryan Billups with a leap of 45-03.00. With a jump of 6-04.75, Alex Lockhart finished first. Tyson Williams, Godell and Ian Lettow took second, third and fourth in the shot put with throws of 50-00.00, 49-01.50 and 48-07.50, respectively. In the long jump Agwu leapt 20-06.25 feet and Billups jumped 20-05.00, placing fourth and fifth.
In other results, at the UCSD Triton Invitational Missy Faubus finished 13th in the discus with a throw of 51.41 meters (168-08). Faubus and Jason Schutz will throw the hammer later this evening. Results will be posted following completion of the meet.
The Rams will compete in Laramie, Wyo., next week at the Front Range Classic Saturday.
