LARAMIE, Wyo. - The CSU men's and women's cross country teams couldn't have asked for a better start to their seasons after each were very impressive in winning the Wyoming Invitational. Redshirt freshman Ellie Rastall won the women's race with a time of 14 minutes, 49.5 seconds to pace the women's team, and sophomore Jake Keyser led the Rams with a third-place finish in a time of 22:18.5.

"This was a very good way to start the season," Head Coach Bryan Berryhill said. "While we thought the women would win, this win definitely means a lot to the men."

The women's team placed four runners in the top five of the 2.5-mile race, with sophomore Allison Gohl finishing third, freshman Nicole Peters fourth, and freshman Kendra Gerk fifth. The women scored 22 points, defeating Wyoming by 28 points. Air Force finished in third place with 81 points, and the Northern Colorado finished fourth with 87 points.

Berryhill was very pleased with the women's race, especially considering he rested many of his top runners in favor of some of new faces.

"We saw a lot of really good things from the new girls today," he said. "It is a big step in the right direction."

On the men's side, three other runners joined Keyser in the top 10 of the 4.25-mile race, with junior Jeremy Freed finishing fourth, senior Kip Taylor fifth, and junior Andrew Mauk eighth. The men scored 33 points, narrowly defeating Wyoming, who finished with 42. Air Force scored 47, and Northern Colorado scored 120.

"We saw a lot of heart out there from our men today, from the group as a whole," Berryhill said with a smile. "This win should definitely give them confidence going forward."

The Rams next see action on Sept. 13 when they host the Colorado State Classic in Fort Collins.
