FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The CSU men's and women's cross country teams made it two-for-two on Saturday as both teams won the second annual Colorado State Classic held at Hughes Stadium. Redshirt freshman Ellie Rastall won her second straight race with a time of 18 minutes, 30.7 seconds, while sophomore transfer Daniel Wallis was the top male CSU finisher, finishing third overall in a time of 21:12.4.
For the second straight meet, both teams were very impressive as the women placed six runners in the top 10 while the men placed four. Needless to say, Head Coach Bryan Berryhill was very impressed.
"Our women did exactly what we thought they would do," he said. "They put themselves out in front and raced very hard. The men showed a lot of heart today. We didn't have one of our leaders racing, with Jeremy Freed being injured, but they showed a lot of maturity out there. I'm very proud of this result, especially after our poor showing here last year."
Prior to the collegiate races, there was an open citizen's race, which took place on the same course loop as the college women. Upwards of 50 people took part in the race with ages ranging from 10 through 67. Ryan Donovan of Fort Collins was the overall winner in a time of 17:01.3, while Jen Gunderson, also from Fort Collins, was the overall women's winner in a time of 19:59.9.
Joining Rastall in the top 10 of the collegiate 5K women's race were Allison Gohl (third), Kendra Gerk (fourth), Nicole Peters (fifth), Kirsten Anthony (seventh), and Crystal Pitney (10th). The Rams scored 20 points followed by Western State (66), Utah (103), Northern Colorado (151), Fort Lewis (186), Metro State (205), Colorado College (232), and Colorado Christian (306).
On the men's side, the Rams scored a total of 38 points, beating out Western State (48), Fort Lewis (141), Metro State (153), Colorado College (164), Northern Colorado (263), and Colorado Christian (no score available). In addition to Wallis, top 10 finishers in the 4-mile race were Jake Keyser (fifth), Kip Taylor (ninth), and Ryan Friese (10th).
"While Ellie once again had a great race, I was very pleased to see the effort that Dan Wallis put forward," Berryhill concluded. "He ran a great race, and it was really nice to see him step up."
The Rams next see action next Saturday as they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Colorado College Invite.
