CSU tennis finishes Day 2 of Wyoming Invitational

LARAMIE, Wyo. - - The Colorado State women's tennis team finished its second day of competition at the Wyoming Invitational Friday. The team competed in only singles competition due to the rainy weather conditions but came out with a fierce, competitive attitude, sending five singles players to the semifinals Saturday.
Head Coach Jon Messick was extremely surprised by his team after the first day of singles competition at the invitational Friday.
"We have a chance to win the bracket having five players place in the top seven of the semifinals," said Messick. "The team is winning matches that I thought we would have trouble with and the girls are exceeding my expectations."
The tournament consists of three flights of singles: Flight 1 (gold), Flight 2 (brown) and Flight 3 (white), and two flights of doubles, Flight 1 (gold) and Flight 2 (brown).
In the gold singles flight, Lauren Strasburger beat Missy Harris (Montana State), 8-4, then went on to defeat Tabatha Knop (Northern Colorado), 8-6, in the second round. Strasburger will compete in the semifinals of the gold singles flight Saturday. Laura Neal received a first-round bye and earned a second-round victory against Brittany DeFelice (Wyoming), 8-2. Neal will also compete in the semifinals round of the gold flight Saturday. Freshmen Tori Arneson lost to Rebecca Berger (Wyoming), 8-4, in the first round and will play in a backdraw match Saturday.
In the brown singles flight, Lauren Mulhern earned a first-round victory against Alyssia Pyne (WSU), 8-1. She was then defeated by Carly Van Hollen (Wyoming), 8-5, in the second round. Mulhern will compete in the backdraw of brown flight Saturday.
Anette Pohjalainen defeated Jennifer Coll (Montana State), 9-7, and earned a victory against Jodi Ciarvella (Northern Colorado), 8-3, in the second round. Pohjalainen will compete in the semifinals of the brown flight Saturday.
Greer Satherlie earned a victory against Virginia Iwinski (Wyoming), 8-6. She went on to defeat Luiza Xavier (Northern Colorado), 8-4, earning her a spot in the semifinals of the brown flight Saturday.
Kirsten Stople defeated Ali Griffin (Montana State), 8-6, then earned a victory against Jen Whateley (Northern Colorado), 8-3, earning a spot in the semifinals of the brown flight Saturday.
In the white singles flight, Katie Brown was defeated by Hannah LaForest (Northern Colorado), 8-5. Manar Al-Jazzaf lost to Ronnie Spencer (Wyoming), 8-4, in the first round of competition. Rui Xu was defeated by Andrea De La Torro (Montana State), 8-2. The Rams may play in backdraw competition depending on the weather Saturday.
Play resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with the gold and brown doubles finals matches, as well as the semifinals and finals of the three singles flights. Backdraw matches will depend on the weather.
